Reducing overwhelm and pain when working at a desk
14 years ago, I was selling videogames at Micromania (the French Gamestop). I was on my feet all day, not particularly stressed, and pain-free.
Then I moved to Germany and started a long career in sitting at a desk, staring at a computer all day 👩💻
The toll it took on my body and mental health within just a year was shocking.
There's one particular method I've found helpful over the years to reduce the feeling of overwhelm that comes from having many things to do and no organisation skills:
The ABC Method - Bye bye overwhelm
This is how I plan my week and organise my tasks.
Every Friday, I take 30 minutes to plan the week after. For each day of the week, I'll have:
- 1 or 2 A-tasks that need to be done no matter what
- 1 or 2 B-tasks that are important but not urgent
- up to 3 C-tasks that are pure bonus
And I stick to the plan.
That means that if on Monday I am blessed by the Goddess of Motivation and I finish all my tasks, I don't start doing Tuesday's tasks.
I just do something else that is important to me that isn't work.
The result? I don't feel overwhelmed during the week, and I get to the weekend feeling like I have accomplished SO MUCH.
Will you give it a try? :)
Have you ever heard of Office Syndrome?
It's a constellation of symptoms that many office workers experience: shoulder, neck and back pain, headaches, wrist and finger pain, numbness in the fingers...
If that sounds familiar, I think you'll find this podcast episode helpful:
