How to self-care...
I was asked this important question last week by one of my wonderful clients.
Picture this. You're barely managing a self-care routine as it is, and suddenly...
💀 Your son starts kindergarten 💀 You have to travel for work 💀 You have to prepare for an impending move 💀 3 of your coworkers are going on holiday and 2 others call in sick during crunch time
Any of these familiar?
This is when I like to call in the Busy Mode Method. (I heard about from a mentor of mine called Ella, the Fitness Psych.)
It's pretty simple.
The idea is to manage our energy: we want to make sure we take care of ourselves so we can deal with the demands of our life. But we also don't want to put too much pressure on ourselves, and have our self-care become another chore on our plate.
How do we do that?
Try and find 3 manageable habits that you will commit to, without tracking them.
What it can look like (just an example):
- A 5-10 minute morning routine (a bit of breathing, a bit of movement to greet your day with a calm mind and energised body).
- Making sure you eat fruit & veggies every day to nourish your body properly, even if you don't have time to cook.
- Going to bed between 22:30 and 23:30. Because everything is easier when we have slept.
I choose the 3 habits that have the most impact for me (slow mornings, nourishing food, enough sleep), but you might pick something else.
The main idea behind this is to avoid our tendency to throw every act of self-care out of the window because we feel like we are too busy.
Anything is always better than nothing. When your world is upside down, simple acts of self-care will have an amazing grounding effect that will keep you sane.
Ask me how I know.
Om, peace 🧡
